Art Therapy

Art Therapy is a non-traditional alternative to talk therapy. It effectiveness lies in accessing limbic areas of the brain, including implicit memory, to bypass “old stories” embedded in our narratives.

An inherent, non-threatening and respectful approach, utilizing art in the therapeutic process can access unexpected material, primarily from a client’s unconscious, that can aid in processing and resolving problems quicker than traditional talk therapy. By activating the limbic system, information is readily accessed that is unexpected through implicit memory. Resolution can be achieved through changing an image(s), therefore creating a new experience in the limbic area, speeding up repair by installing new perspective.

Often associated with working with children, art therapy is equally effective with adults, open to exploring new possibilities. No artistic talent is needed, just an openness and willingness to explore new experiences through metaphor.

Although Terre uses traditional forms of therapy, this is modality offered as an adjunct intervention or for those looking for an alternative experience in the therapeutic process.
